TARGET AUDIENCE:
This course is intended for environmental professionals, scientists and engineers that are involved in site remediation.

PROGRAMME:
There are many benefits to expediting cleanup of contaminated sites, however, these efforts can be energy and resource intensive and result in a number of unintended impacts. Growing awareness of the need to use resources wisely and reduce our overall energy and carbon footprint, has led to a wide spread call for factoring sustainability into site remediation and thinking outside the boundaries of the contaminated site when selecting and implementing a remedy.

This new approach calls for minimizing the "environmental footprint" of remedial alternatives and integrating site cleanup and reuse to develop economic opportunities and community assets. This course presents an overview of government and trade group policies and guidance on the following topics:

1. Overview of GSR - What is it, How is it being considered in different countries
2. Framework for integrating sustainability into remediation
3. Metrics and tools – What should be measured, how are they used in decision making, what are tools for calculating relevant metrics?
4. Best Practices and Technologies – What are examples of approaches that can be used?

Case studies of how to evaluate and improve the sustainability of remedial actions will be presented and a framework for applying these principles will be discussed.
