Karin Guiguer is a biologist with a M.Sc., and Ph.D., degrees by the University of Waterloo, in Canada. Dr. Guiguer is a Senior Risk Assessor and Ecotoxicologist with over 25 years of experience in Ecological and Human Health Risk Assessments. Her work comprises contaminated site investigations consisting of human health and ecological risk assessments, sediment toxicity assessment and senior peer reviewer for risk assessment and toxicological studies.
Currently based in Brazil, Karin is leading the development of Ecological Risk Assessments (ERA), and is the Relator for the ERA Technical Norm working with São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais and other Environmental State Agencies. Karin has also worked in the development of the Contaminated Soils Quality Regulations & Guidelines in Perú work for the SNMPE (Sociedad Nacional de Minería Petróleo y Energía).
She has conducted risk assessments and developed remedial criteria for sites impacted by chlorinated solvents, petroleum hydrocarbons, metals, polychlorinated aromatic hydrocarbons and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOs). Dr. Guiguer is experienced in managing small and large scales projects for a variety of land uses (e.g., residential, commercial, institutional, and industrial). Her industry sector includes the mining sector, pulp&paper sector, environmental agencies, brownfield redevelopment and manufacturing sector.
Karin has also considerable experience with contaminated sediment. She has assessed the effects on aquatic biota and receptors higher up the food chain of sediment contaminated with arsenic, mercury & methylmercury and selenium in the Arctic, BC, NWT, Ontario in Canada and in Cubatão in Brazil. Additionally, she has conducted projects on Effluent Environmental Effects Monitoring (EEM) the mining and pulp and paper industries.
