In this edition, the papers will no longer be edited and that is why we ask the authors to prepare their contributions according to the rules established herein.

ABAS has been running into a number of problems caused by authors who fail to attend and deliver the oral presentation of their papers thus harming the technical session and disappointment to those who are interested in attending the presentation. This also leads to unnecessary extra cost to the event in virtue of the installations which need to be rented as well as the personnel required to the technical sessions.

In view of this problem, which has become a source of complaints in the previous events, ABAS board requires that the authors of the papers chosen make their oral presentation and pay their registration fees so that their publication may be validated as well as the execution of a “Agreement to Deliver an Oral Presentation of the Paper” by one of the authors and returned to the event administration office by a deadline which will be informed at a later date.

Those who are unsure if they can make their oral presentation should first send their paper according to the desired format. However, up to the execution date of the said Agreement, they must request, in writing, that their presentation should be changed to panel format, and the registration must be completed on the same that so as to enable its printing in the annals.

The authors who agree to make an oral presentation of their papers and do not attend to deliver it, unless because of an event of force majeur, will not be entitled to present their papers orally in the next ABAS event.

The papers may be submitted for oral presentation or for panel presentation.

The choice between oral presentation and panel presentation must be initially made by the author and pointed out upon the submission of the paper.

The Scientific Committee shall indicate the papers approved for panel or oral presentation and may change the choices previously made by the authors.

All papers will be published in full, regardless of their presentation format.

The papers must be sent in .pdf format, edited according to the established guidelines.

The papers will not be reviewed or edited and the author must do the final review before completing the upload.

If you have not installed the software to convert your paper in Word document into pdf file, you may download it from

You will need to install 2 pieces of software from that website: “Pdf995 Printer Driver Version 7.1s” and the “Free Converter • Beta 1.1”.

After completing the installation, these pieces of software will have installed in your computer the printer PDF995. Before converting the file, you need to change the paper size in Configuração (Configuration), right-clicking on “Iniciar \ Impressoras \ PDF995” (“Initialize \ Printers \ PDF995”) in Propriedades (Properties) \ Paper and select A4 size.

In order to convert the paper, open the program used to prepare the document, click on “Imprimir” (“Print”), select printer PDF995 and click on “OK”.

The software will convert it and will display the result on the screen. We recommend you print the document and check it against the original to prevent conversion-related failures or problems.

Because it is free software, every time a file is converted, the software sponsor website page will be open.

Once again we remind you that no reviews will be made.

  • Left: 2.0 cm;
  • Right: 2.0 cm;
  • Gutter: 0 cm.

  • Footer: 1.40 cm.

Paper size:

The papers may be typed in any word processor using the following formatting:

  • Size 14 only for the titles and 12 for the remaining parts of the paper.

  • Line spacing: 1.5 line;
  • Alignment:

CENTER-JUSTIFIED – paper title, authors’ names, figures, tables and associated legends.

JUSTIFIED – body of paper.

The first page must include the paper title (font size 14, lowercase letter, bold, center-justified), the authors’ full names (upper case and lower case letter separated by a semi-colon) and professional data (institution, full address, phone number and Email) inserted into the footer.

Do not add professional titles to the side of the author’s name. If you find it convenient, it should be the first item of the related footer.

Below the name of the authors, include the “Resumo” (Abstract in Portuguese) with up to 200 words, followed by the Abstract (in English), also with up to 200 words and the keywords (minimum 3, maximum 5).

After the keywords, insert a page break so that the content of the document always starts from page 2. Should your “Resumo” and Abstract be too lengthy and use up part of the second page, the paper text must start after you click on ENTER twice.

The paper title will be the only item in the paper with font 14 and the rest will follow the guidelines in “FONTS AND LETTER SPACING”.

An ENTER space must be left between the item that make up the first page of the paper (title, autors’ names, resumo, abstract, keywords).

The authors and co-authors shall be limited to a maximum number of twelve, that is, one author and up to eleven co-authors.

When the paper is registered, it must be informed who will be the author for correspondence purposes and also who is the author who will present the paper in the Congress.

The footer, included in all pages of the paper, must mention the name of the event with the words in upper case, italic, left-justified and in Arial, font size 8 with the page number right-justified. After writing the text, click on Boarders and Shading and insert the upper border.

For example:

IV Congresso Internacional de Meio Ambiente Subterrâneo

IV International Congress on Subsurface Environment

IV Congresso Internacional de Medio Ambiente Subterrâneo

The first line of each paragraph must be 1 cm away from the left margin. In order to format the paragraph, use the option format paragraph in the menu or use the TAB key.

The presentation of the content of the paper starts on page 2. The main items of the paper must be numbered sequentially, the Introduction being No 1 and the Bibliographic References with the final number. Between the end of the text of one item and the title of the following title, a blank “ENTER” must be inserted. After a new item, click on ENTER and start typing that paragraph.

The items must be typed according to the example below:

The sub-items must be set up as follows:

2.1 – Objectives – upper case letters, left-justified.

2.1.1 – Specific Objectives – upper and lower case letter, italics and left-justified. – Case Study – upper and lower case letter and left-justified.

The first paragraph, after each item or sub-item, must start one line after the title of the item (or sub-item), the alignment being Justified. The first word must start one centimeter from the left margin.

All figures, photos and graphs must be included in the body of the paper. The figures must be identified using consecutive numbering (upper and lower case letters, center-justified), displayed below the figure (i.e. Figure 1. Title).

If the document was set up in such a manner so as to generate a paper document, make sure that the electronic setup contained in the file produces the same result.

The alignment of all tables must be center-justified and included in the body paper with a reference. The tables must be identified using consecutive numbering, and title, displayed above the table (i.e. Table 1. Title).

The equations may be incorporated into the paper in many different ways. They may be scanned images, created in an external software application; they may be prepared using symbol fonts or with the equation editor of the word processor used to prepare the paper. Whatever the case, they must be numbered consecutively along the document, starting at 1.25 cm from the left margin and the number must be placed in parenthesis aligned at 1.5 cm from the right margin.

Footnotes are allowed and must be included in the footer of the corresponding page (with font size 8).

All papers to be published in the Annals of I CIMAS must be written in Portuguese, English or Spanish.

The list of bibliographic references must be inserted at the end of the technical paper and must include only the papers mentioned in the text (including legends, figures and tables).

They must mention the authors’ last names, followed by the name initials, publication title, publishing company, place, date and other information that may be required for identification purposes. The ISBN codification (when known) must be included after the editor’s name. In the paper body, the references must be numbered in the order of appearance in the text and placed between brackets (i.e [1])
